Understanding the relationship between good health and quality sleep, Sleep Technology Corporation’s Chairman, Michelle Tan, began the development of our bed and pillow technology very early in our company‘s history. In 2001 she conceived of the concept of “spinal support” during sleep and quickly recognized its business and marketing potential. We developed and sold a line of advanced support pillows priced at NT$4000 (about USD$ 125 ) each, and quickly sold over 10,000 pillows . Michelle Tan’s principle in doing business in the past 20 years has been to provide the best quality goods to her customers. 8 years ago, however, when she was suffering from a nearly debilitating case of sciatica, she had a realization. She came to understand that even the best made mattresses do not suit everyone, She decided that the only way to improve sleep and spinal health was to custom-make the mattress.

If she had had the M.M.T concept earlier, and could have been completely relaxed during her 8 hours of sleep each day, perhaps the problem she had with lumbar disk protrusion would not have worsened. She now only sleeps in her own bed and with her own pillow. Even when she travels for work, she brings her own pillow.

Our business model focuses on researching, developing and promoting innovative 10Days medical beds and a series of spinal support products. This approach is in alignment with our concept of custom-made beds created first by taking individual’s MMT measurements in order to eliminate the inadequacies of “ill-fitted” traditional mattresses and pillows. Our products guarantee our customers a more comfortable and healthy sleep.

As a matter of fact, the medical field has not reached a consensus and is still debating whether one should sleep on a firm bed or a soft bed. Matresses pass the product certification tests as long as the manufacturing materials pass low heat conduction, low resilience rate, house-dust mite resistance and anti-bacterium tests Michelle also realized that body shape, size, and weight, and curve of the spine are different among individuals. Only by using M.M.T. method can one find the most suitable pillow and mattress, to provide just the right amount of support to each part of the body. Michelle Tan emphasized that if you choose a bed and pillow that are suitable for you, you’ll feel noticeable improvement in the quality of your sleep within 10 days. But sleeping with the right pillow and bed can not suddenly heal an injured spine. Therefore, we recommend following the “10Days to improve the quality of your sleep” approach. Our main goal is to maintain your body’s function within its optimal range by taking care of ourselves.

We at Sleep Technology include a “30 day trial” guarantee. If you are not satisfied we will refund your money unconditionally. We have never had someone take advantage of this policy and get their money back. Michelle Tan recalled a customer once purchased a pillow and returned it in a few days for a full refund. The reason she returned the pillow was because not only did it not cure her headaches, but her headaches lasted longer. Michelle Tan explained the concept of “10Days to improve the quality of your sleep” to this customer, and guaranteed that if her headache problem doesn’t improve after 30 days, she will accept the returned item with full refund. Afterward, this customer never called back.

Sleep Technology has 5 different types of mattresses and 15 types of pillows with various degrees of thickness and arc to select from. We also insist that we don’t sell our beds and pillows to a customers unless they go through the M.M.T. method. The reason is very simple, we want to help our customers make the right product choice.

Gradually, many of our competitors started using similar test with their customers. before selling them a mattress and pillow. Michelle Tan was encouraged and only mildly concerned about this. She was glad to know that the MMT had become popular because she sincerely believes in the system, but she was concerned that the system was not being used with integrity. It is essential that customers be educated about the system. It’s not appropriate to test customers and then sell them a mattress and pillow that are just soft and comfortable.

Sometimes customers were put through the test only to be offered the one pillow that a company had. This is not integrative and could be false and inappropriate advertising

.Michelle sincerely wants people to know that the results of the test are individual and that they directly correlate with products that are designed to meet their individual needs. It is a priority at Sleep Tech. to educate our customers so that the best possible product choices can be made.

When Michelle trains her employees, she teaches them to “start by caring for your customer’s health first“. Employees are taught to take the test procedure,themselves so that they can be more supportive of the customers. Also she expects her employees to spend plenty of time with customers to be sure the right choices are made.

Michele Tan was not surprised that the competition came out with products that looked and felt identical. But she knew they were not. Our process of producing pillows and mattresses is unique. Our products pass through many hands and many phases in their development. Some of our pillows have taken up to 2 painstaking years to refine and perfect. We have the utmost confidence in our products, the materials used, and the integrity of their creation.

Michelle Tan is quite confident about all of her products .But that isn’t the end of the story. Sleep Technology continues to research and develop new materials. We even introduced low heat conduction material. As it is important to understand the product from a medical perspective, it is also important that it be comfortable. When customers comment that the retail price is too high, Michelle Tan points out “We spend 8 hours a day sleeping.If you divide that by the retail price, then I feel it’s a very worthwhile investment”. Instead of cutting the price to compete, she would rather spend more time on research, finding and developing raw materials, technology, to improve quality while addressing the market’s demands in order to become more competitive.

Sleep Technology conceived of the idea of developing mattresses and pillows with the medical model in mind. We partnered with Chung Cheng University’s Sleep Research Center to conduct a clinical study to prove that Sleep Technology’s mattress and pillow are beneficial to those who have sleep apnea. We successfully created products that are unique and sold them in upscale department stores. Our product’s uniqueness stands out among other brands in these upscale retail circuits. This has helped solidify Sleep Technology’s brand recognition. There are now a total of 22 retail locations, including retail stores and special outlets. Last year we experienced tremendous growth.

According to Michelle Tan’s philosophy, running a business is not just about profit , the, market share and the ability to grow are equally important factors. The bigger the market share and the stronger the growth, the more likely a business will become the leader in it’s trade. As the leader of a particular trade, you must lead in concept building, trade technology, and marketing specifications. You also have the ability to create new markets. She is confident that many years from now Sleep Tech. will remain successful and be viewed as a leader in the field.

Michelle Tan wants to give the following encouragement to those thinking of creating their own businesses: “Have a vision, Set Goals, Strengthen your execution”. She established her business at the age of 24. There were ups and downs along the way. She had invested in a furniture making business and suffered a loss. In the end she re-established her direction by finding the “Medical model that leads to revolutionizing traditional bedding goods”. She has lbeen a leader in exploring this area of human health.
