Outlast® was a technology originally developed for spacesuits used by NASA (US National Aeronautics and Space Administration). In 2005, Outlast became the temperature-control muti-purpose material known as Thermocules, which has helped to improve the quality of life for people around the world. Nowadays, it’s used to make gloves, pants, socks and other clothing items. This material can be used as a buffer to regulate temperature conditions such as outer space and high altitudes regions. Presently in Taiwan, TENDAYS is the only company using this material and is taking a leading role in the world using this highly functional material to develop our bedding sets. The Smart Temperature Control fiber bedding set is just such an example.

Presently, the typical temperature control materials used mainly rely on wool or other synthetic fibers as an insulating material. These materials seal air tightly in order to achieve temperature control effect. However, OUTLAST material uses a temperature adjustment method by using a temperature regulating fiber that can absorb, store and release warmth so wearers can stay warm. Even if clothing gets wet or feel extruded, wearer still can maintain warm and comfortable. This material is especially suitable for people living in conditions with big temperature differences. |

1. Outlast(R) Thermocules(TM) absorb the excess heat.
2. Store heat is released to the body as needed.
3. The result is a constant microclimate.

How it works
PCMs are materials that can absorb, store and release heat while the material changes from solid to liquid and back to solid. This is known as a phase change. Water changing from solid (ice) to liquid is an example of this phenomenon. During these phase changes large amounts of heat are absorbed or released.
Microencapsulation of phase change materials
Microencapsulation is the process of capturing small amounts of phase change materials in a shell material so that the phase change materials are permanently enclosed and protected.
The protective polymer shell is very durable and designed to withstand textile production methods used in fiber, yarn spinning, weaving, knitting, and coating applications.
Outlast Technologies microencapsulated PCMs (mPCMs) are called Thermocules™. Thermocules™ can then be applied as a finishing on fabrics or infused into fibers during the manufacturing process.

Infrared Imaging

Infrared pictures can clearly visulazie how OutlastR Adaptive ComfortR materials work. Due to basic physical laws all bodies (humans, plants, objects) release energy in terms of thermal radiation. The higher the object's temperature is, the more intensive is the infrared radiation which it releases.
